The "glass ceiling". This rather neat, highly accurate metaphor first came into use in the late 1980s, when two Wall Street Journal reporters coined the phrase to describe the ‘invisible barrier which appeared to block women from the top jobs in corporate America’. Over time, it has become more extensively used to encompass unspoken discrimination against ethnic minority groups, which remains widespread to this very day. .
We can be so distracted by all manner of external influences and opinions, that our attention is drawn away from the harmful effects of our own negative self-talk and the impact that our perceptions of ourselves can have on our ability to progress. How often do we shy away from the unknown through nothing else but fear of failure? How many times have we labelled ourselves and declared ourselves disqualified through self imposed restrictions? We can sometimes be our own worst enemies, barricading ourselves in behind a wall of excuses, brick by brick, stone by stone, until there appears no way out. Too married, too single, too divorced, too old, too young, too many children, not enough children, too wealthy, too poor - and the list goes on. .
Have you ever considered that those things which you consider to be your weaknesses, could actually be the very qualities through which you will fulfil your calling in life? The thorns in our sides keep us humble, relatable and empathetic as we grow through what we go through and in time, learn to share the benefit of our experiences with others. There is healing in the truth that we need not let our past define, destroy, devalue or diminish our present or our future. .
On this Friday morning, rather than focusing on what we can’t achieve, why not choose to concentrate on what we can do with whatever we have right here, right now, at our immediate disposal? There is a great deal to be said for confidently believing in the value of our contributions and chipping away, little by little, is the surest way to eventually bring the whole ceiling splintering and crashing down, leaving wide open space to nurture limitless potential, reaching up to the skies and far, far beyond. .
